George Seferis spent his summer holidays as a child in this house in the small town of Iskele (Skala), near Izmir (Smyrna), in Turkey.

Inside the display there are three plaques, one in Turkish, one in Greek and one in English, saying:

“This was the summer house of

GEORGE SEFERIS

Izmir 1900 – Athens 1971

Poet and Greek Diplomat

Nobel Prize in Literature 1963″

I cannot read the small plaque on the left, I think it is in Turkish.

Next to the house, which today is a hotel, there is a restaurant – cafe. Both the hotel and the restaurant are named after the poet.

On the wall of the main seating area of the restaurant, one can see newspaper clips and awards, all under the eye of Mustafa KemalAtatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

Seferis was born in Izmir (Smyrna) in 1900, in a well to do middle class Greek family.

His father’s surname was “Seferiadis”, a name with a Turkish root borrowed from Arabic, sefer, meaning journey, campaign, voyage, state of war.

His father Stelios was a layer and a poet, a despotic, authoritarian figure that tormented George throughout his life. Despo, George’s mother, was a warm, emotionally rich woman, who counterbalanced the emotional traumas George suffered from his father by offering her support to George and her other children.

Despo came from a rich family, with lots of land in the area. Her mother, George’s maternal grandmother, owned a complex of houses in the fishing village of Skala, today Iskele, near Smyrna.

Every year from 1900 to 1912 , George would spend the winter in Smyrna and the summer in the maternal grandmother’s house in Skala, which left strong imprints of its seascape and fishermen in Seferis’ heart and mind.
