Real Greece – Part 1: Thermopylae by Cy Twombly and Konstantinos Kavafis

This is the first post in a series of posts on Real Greece,. The events of the last few months have shed a very negative light on Greece, and I feel the need to  share with you the “real” Greece, which is the Greece I know.

Today I present sculptures made by Cy Twombly, an American artist who I like very much. The sculptures are named “Thermopylae”, after the narrow passage where the Greeks fought the Persions back in 480 BC, and are paired with the poem of Constantinos Kavafis.

The bronze sculpture is on display at the Brandhorst museum in Munich, Germany.

There is also a sibling plaster sculpture, on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

I quote from Jessica Stewart’s text:

The work is inscribed with lines from modern Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, who was similarly inspired by the illustrious battle. Twombly often makes bronzes of his “white originals,” and particularly in its cast rendition Thermopylae relates closely to a fifth-century BC battle helmet. The mounded dome from which four tulips rise calls to mind another ancient association, an Etruscan tomb with burgeoning vegetation.

spacer As poet and critic Frank O’Hara suggested in 1955, Twombly’s sculptures are both “witty and funereal”; they are also elegant and coarse, fragile and monumental, visual and literary, and above all, ancient and contemporary. Metamorphosis is an essential aspect of Twombly’s works, and these dualities highlight the depths of meaning contained in their often quotidian forms. Twombly’s spare wooden constructions–or their bronze surrogates–distill archaic sources and present them in a uniquely modern language of form.”

Thermopylae

Translated by Edmund Keeley & Philip Sherrard

Honor to those who in the life they lead
define and guard a Thermopylae,
Never betraying what is right,
consistent and just in all they do
but showing pity also, and compassion;
generous when they’re rich, an when they’re
poor,
still generous is small ways,
still helping as much as they can;
always speaking the truth,
yet without hating those who lie.
And even more honor is due to them
when they foresee (as many do foresee )
that Ephialtis wil turn up in the end,
that the Medes will break through after all.

Happy Valentine’s!

Welcome the New Year wearing RED underwear!

FROM A NEWSPAPER SOMEWHERE IN ASIA

Good luck charms are usually worn around the neck, or on the wrist. But this year, Chinese Malaysians are wearing them under their pants.

Red men’s underwear emblazoned with auspicious animals and characters have become the rage among Malaysian Chinese ahead of the Chinese lunar New Year holidays, the New Straits Times reported Friday.

The characters printed on the briefs — in the front and at the back — read “attracting fortune,” “golden fortune,” “prosperous four seasons” and “swirling dragons.”

The nationality of the pictured man could not be confirmed

“RED…. Many cultures consider red a lucky color. Chinese families typically hand out red envelopes filled with money at the new year, and rumor has it that the Spanish (and the Turks) slip on some new red undies just before the clock strikes twelve.  But red foods will also brighten the future…so consider adding some cranberry sauce, or red beets, or sundried tomato sauce to the table.”

“RED

Buy red if she’s a sexual extrovert, someone who likes to get all the attention, and who can be rather demanding in bed. Red is the colour of confidence and extroversion but it’s not all it seems in terms of sex.

Red is really the colour of anger and strong emotions, meaning a red undie-wearer is into dramatic and spontan-eous sex rather than anything more drawn-out and romantic.”

“A new study says your guy can’t resist you in red.

Scientists at the University of Rochester have found that women who wear a red outfit on a date with a man will be treated more generously and hold his attention more carefully than women who don’t wear the color.

Through five psychological tests, researchers show the color red makes men feel more romantic toward women. And the best part? Guys are unconscious of the affects the color plays in their attraction – all they know is that they want you. Bad.

Even more interesting: Male study subjects say they would spend more cash on a woman wearing a red shirt, than the same woman in a blue shirt.

When wearing red, a woman was also more likely to score an invitation to the prom and to be treated to a more luxurious date.

Red has always been linked with romantic and sexual matters, from red hearts on Valentine’s Day, to red-light districts. But experts say the current findings have clear implications for the fashion business, product design and promotion.

So wear red undies, don a red sweater, or just swipe on red lipstick – he wont be able to resist you!”

“OoOOo, red underwear is the lucky charm?!
Hahaha, 2moro sure out stock 1!!!
Happy Chinese New Year!!!!
MOOOOoooOoOOoOooO……………………”

What colour of underwear do Mexican women traditionally wear for good luck on New Year’s Eve? What colour do they wear in Venezuela and why the difference?

In both countries red undies are thought to bring luck in love, yellow for wealth and white for peace. Yellow is the most popular in Venezuela, red in Mexico and pink in Argentina. Also helps to wear yellow knickers inside out to improve luck. Guess it comes down to what you want the most for the new year.

Lunch 26th December 2009 – Toscana meets Thessaly

On the 26th December is the name day of my “brother”, Manolis. We have made it a tradition that every year we get together in my house and celebrate his name day having lunch. The same happened yesterday, and I happy to report the proceedings of this event.

As you may remember, I already had a go at the menu a couple of weeks ago, but as it usually happens, things changed. The ever moving fate brought two regions of the Mediterranean together on the menu. Thessaly of Greece and Toscana of Italy contributed their best products. Spleen sausage (splinantero) from Trikala and Bistecca Fiorentina from Panzano, Toscana.

Lets start from the appetizer, which is like a greeting card of the two regions in an envelope.

Hard salty goat’s cheese (kefalotiri) from Trikala and pancetta from Toscana, join forces in the greeting card.

Place one slice of cheese on top of a phillo pastry sheet, then a slice of pancetta, then tomato and parsley and wrap as an envelope. Bake and serve steaming hot.

This envelope was well received by all participants, who more or less gulped it down in a frenetic mode. This was largely due to the fact that the cheese had melted, it was thoroughly covered by the liquid fat of the pancetta, and engaged in constant dialogue with the acidity of the tomato and the strong sweet flavoor of the parsley. Hard to resist!

Next in line was the spleen sausage, the “splinantero” (σπληναντερο), prepared by a shepherd in a village near Trikala, in the region of Thessaly. This is forbidden food, according to the European Union. This is sausage made from the spleen and heart of muton, wrapped in the “suet” fat (μπολια). For the Greek speaking visitors, I have created an entry in wikictionary on splinantero (the spleen sausage).

I grilled it on charcoal fire and the result was divine! The honest beauty and quality of the ingredients shone through the grilled melting cover. Every dialog seized. Only moans could be heard.

Then it was time to greet the Tuscan beauty, La Bistecca Fiorentina! Especially prepared by my friend Dario Cecchini in Panzano, Chianti. I grilled la bistecca over charcoal, as the spleen sausage.

In Greece a lot of people eat meat well done, and so my task was a difficult one, as I personally detest well done meat. In any case, it all worked well and everyone was happy! Manolis more than anyone else, as he devoured the bone!

The bistecca was out of this world! Tender, juicy, full of flavors, it was literally melting in the mouth! Grazie Dario!

Every good meal must end with a good desert, may be more than good, to lighten the hearts and the stomachs of the participants. In this case, I made a kiwi tart on the basis of a recipe by Thomas Keller (Bouchon).

I am proud to report that not even a flake of the pastry was left! Needless to say, this lunch also demolished the alleged divorce that I have taken from sweets. (Manolis could make a comment here!).

A short note on the wines, all of which came from Toscana. We started with Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2000, from Val delle Rose (92 out of 100 in the Wine Spectator). Continued with Alte d’ Altesi 2000 from Altesino (93 out of 100 in the Wine Spectator). For the desert we had Castello di Brolio Vinsanto del Chianti 2004, from Barone Ricasoli.

Μια μερα του Δεκεμβρη – αποπειρα στοχασμου πανω στο Θανατο (A day in December – an attempt to contemplate Death)

The day brings a lot of memories. Memories of loved ones who are no longer with me on this earth. The trigger for this shower of memories is the death of a 15 old student – Alexis Grigoropoulos – last year by a policeman in downtown Athens.

I want to start with Goethe’s poem “Der Erlkoenig”, which Schuebert turned into a beautiful song (lieder).

There is no better interpretation of the approach of Death, its flirting with the innocent child, and the final abduction.

Here it is sung by the King of Baritones, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau.

Ποιος καλπαζει τοσο αργα μεσα στο σκοταδι και τον ανεμο;

Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He holds the boy in the crook of his arm
He holds him safe, he keeps him warm.

“Πατερα, δεν τον βλεπεις τον Βασιλια;

“My son, why do you hide your face so anxiously?”
“Father, do you not see the Erl king?
The Erl king with crown and tail?”
“My son, it’s a wisp of fog.”

“You lovely child, come, go with me!
Many a beautiful game I’ll play with you;
Some colourful flowers are on the shore,
My mother has many golden robes.”

“My father, my father, can’t you hear,
What the Erl king quietly promised me?”
“Be calm, stay calm, my child;
The wind rustles through dry leaves.”

“Θελεις να ερθεις μαζι μου, αγαπητο μου παιδι;

“Do you want to come with me, dear boy?
My daughters shall wait on you fine;
My daughters lead the nightly dances
And will rock and dance and sing you to sleep.”

“My father, my father, can’t you see there,
The Erl king’s daughters in the gloomy place?”
“My son, my son, I see it well:
The old willows they shimmer so grey.”

“I love you, your beautiful form entices me;
And if you’re not willing, I shall use force.”
“My father, my father, he’s grabbing me now!
The Erl king has done me harm!”

The father shudders; he rides swiftly,
He holds the moaning child in his arms.
He can hardly manage to reach his farm;
In his arms, the child was dead.

Ω γλυκύ μου έαρ, γλυκύτατόν μου Τέκνον, πού έδυ σου το κάλλος;

“Oh my sweet spring, my sweetest child, where is your beauty gone?” cries the Holy Mother over the dead body of Jesus.

Death has now captured the Son, and the Mother is weeping.

And here comes the turn, the overthrow, the defeat over Death, which is the defeat of the Fear of Death, with the help of George Seferis, and his poem “Epiphany”.

(Epifania, George Seferis, 1937)

The flowering sea and the mountains in the moon’s waning
the great stone close to the Barbary figs and the asphodels
the jar that refused to go dry at the end of the day
and the closed bed by the cypress trees and your hair
golden; the stars of the Swan and that other star, Aldebaran.

I’ve kept a rein on my life, kept a rein on my life, travelling
among yellow trees in driving rain
on silent slopes loaded with beech leaves,
no fire on their peaks; it’s getting dark.
I’ve kept a rein on my life; on your left hand a line
a scar at your knee, perhaps they exist
on the sand of the past summer perhaps
they remain there where the north wind blew as I hear
an alien voice around the frozen lake.
The faces I see do not ask questions nor does the woman
bent as she walks giving her child the breast.
I climb the mountains; dark ravines; the snow-covered
plain, into the distance stretches the snow-covered plain, they ask nothing
neither time shut up in dumb chapels nor
hands outstretched to beg, nor the roads.
I’ve kept a rein on my life whispering in a boundless silence
I no longer know how to speak nor how to think; whispers
like the breathing of the cypress tree that night
like the human voice of the night sea on pebbles
like the memory of your voice saying ‘happiness’.

I close my eyes looking for the secret meeting-place of the waters
under the ice the sea’s smile, the closed wells
groping with my veins for those veins that escape me
there where the water-lilies end and that man
who walks blindly across the snows of silence.
I’ve kept a rein on my life, with him, looking for the water that touches you
heavy drops on green leaves, on your face
in the empty garden, drops in the motionless reservoir
striking a swan dead in its white wings
living trees and your eyes riveted.

This road has no end, has no relief, however hard you try
to recall your childhood years, those who left, those
lost in sleep, in the graves of the sea,
however much you ask bodies you’ve loved to stoop
under the harsh branches of the plane trees there
where a ray of the sun, naked, stood still
and a dog leapt and your heart shuddered,
the road has no relief; I’ve kept a rein on my life.

The snow and the water frozen in the hoofmarks of the horses.

(interpretation by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard)

A Kiss is just a kiss, or is it something else?

The question of the title is not rhetorical. The kiss is one of the vehicles to supercede one’s one material existence and attempt the ultimate, which is the submersion into another body, thus abolishing one’s own existence.

The two lovers embrace and they momentarily forget their fatal destiny. Cold as the marble they inhabit. They embrace, but they stay apart.

The man wears a crown of vines, and the woman flowers in her hair. They are oblivious to the fact that they are on the edge.  They are content and harmonious.

A kiss may last for fractions of a second, but then also for centuries.

The couple embrace almost in depseration. Their bodies touch and tangle. There is no time to waste. Passion overflows the carnal vessels.

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss,
A sigh is just a sigh…
The fundamental things apply,
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo,
They still say I love you
On that you can rely…
No matter what the future brings,
As time goes by.

And time goes by and before you know it, you feel the cold wind on your back and the dark shadow enveloping you, and you embrace the beloved one, and you seek in her mouth the taste of youth and the aroma of ever lasting passion.

Lini e Lane di Firenze, Catalog 1961 – Table Setting and Etiquette – A journey back in time

Today I want to share with you fragments of the 1961 catalog of the house of  “Lini e Lane di Firenze”. I discovered it in the papers of my mother. It is a journey back in time, and for me a journey of reminiscence.

I start with the cover page of the catalog.

coverThe content is entirely dedicated on the breakfast, lunch and dinner tables. The text is in French.

example_asfodelloasfodello_textI continue with some rules regarding the setting of the table.

The first is the normal way as the authors call it. A basic rule is that the napkin must be simply folded and on the plate.

setting1

Moving on to the more formal arrangements.

We can now state more basic rules.

Most important of all, is that the whole composition must be balanced, all items gravitating towards the undeniable center, the dinner plate.

Utensils are placed in the order of their use, starting from the outside. (Careful with the salad, as in France it is served last!)

Forks are always placed on the left, knifes on the right.

Dinner plates should be 2,5 to 3 centimeters from the edge of the table.

setting2Here comes the text for the setting.

setting_textBut this is not all! We have rules for seating the guests.

seatingAnd the rules for serving!

serving_orderNow is the time to have a look at another example of table setting.

This is a rather casual setting, to lighten things up!example_casual

This is all for today, have a great morning, evening, night, whatever you want it to be!

P.S. This is dedicated to Despinarion, who inspired me with her beautiful post of reminiscence a few days ago. Thank you Despinarion!

Manuel Vazquez Montalban – Recetas Immorales (Ανηθικες Συνταγες)
