Chance

Christian Boltanski, Chance: French Pavillion, Venice Biennale 2011

“The work presented at Venice is optimistic in its reflection on chance and destiny; the chance of birth against the chance of death. Is everything pre-determined? Who controls destiny? Has our path already been decided? Is God present or absent? At the entrance to the pavilion, the visitor is invited to sit on one of the wooden chairs. A voice whispers to him. Each chair “speaks” in a different language uttering the words “Is this the last time?” Is this a message of hope? Or a troubling announcement?… The interior of the pavilion is criss-crossed by a moving walkway, that travels at great speed and upon which hundreds of photos of childrenʼs faces have been printed. The walkway stops randomly and one of the childrenʼs faces is lit up and an alarm sounds. Chance has picked out one child. The process begins all over again, until the walkway stops again and the alarm signals Chanceʼs next choice.” (Press Release)

“O my soul, do not aspire to immportal life, but

exhaust the limits of the possible”

The sunset in Vouliagmeni is one of the most beautiful in the world. It is in harmony with Man.

You can reach all areas, you can swim, you can walk, even the rocks are hospitable.

Sunset in Vouliagmeni, Attica, Greece

Even in Wintertime there are brave souls who swim with their bodies.

When I look at them I always think of Schubert’s Winterreise, set on 24 poems of Wilhelm Mueller. Schubert called it “a cycle of terrifying songs”. Here are two of them, sung by Mathias Goerne, accompanied by Alfred Brendel.

Täuschung – Deception

A light on the dark and icy road at night, might be a warm place to stay, or the deception of a beautiful face.

Der Wegweiser  – The Signpost

Straying restlessly away from the roads, he still seeks rest. There is always a signpost in front of him, pointing to the road from which no wanderer returns. Death?

Sunrise in Kaletzi, near Marathon, Greece

The landscape is barren. Three years ago multiple fires scorched the earth and destroyed beautiful pine forests all around.

But the sun every time it rises, makes the barren landscape look beautiful.

Richard Strauss was one of the greatest composers. Morgen! (“Tomorrow!”) is the last in a set of four songs composed in 1894, set in a poem of John Henry Mackay.

It is sung by Dame Janet Baker.

Tomorrow!

Tomorrow again will shine the sun
And on my sunlit path of earth
Unite us again, as it has done,
And give our bliss another birth…
The spacious beach under wave-blue skies
We’ll reach by descending soft and slow,
And mutely gaze in each other’s eyes,
As over us rapture’s great hush will flow.

Martin Heidegger's Feldweg in Messkirch, Germany

In 1948, one year before his death on 1949, Richard Strauss composed “Fier Letzte Lieder”, his “Last Four Songs” for soprano and orchestra.

At Sunset is sung by Gundula Janowitz. Berliner Philharmoniker is conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

Im Abendrot – At Sunset

We have gone through sorrow and joy
hand in hand;
Now we can rest from our wandering
above the quiet land.

Around us, the valleys bow;
the air is growing darker.
Just two skylarks soar upwards
dreamily into the fragrant air.

Come close to me, and let them flutter.
Soon it will be time for sleep.
Let us not lose our way
in this solitude.

O vast, tranquil peace,
so deep at sunset!
How weary we are of wandering—
Is this perhaps death?

Only through the experience of Delos did the journey to Greece became a sojourn, cleared dwelling by that which Αληθεια is.

Delos itself is that field of unconcealed hiddenness that accords sojourn: first to φυσις, to the pure and self-sheltered rise of mountains and islands, sky and sea, plants and animals, the rise where each thing appears in its strict type but also in its gently suspended form.

In the sojourn granted by αλήθεια the έργον appears as well: everything that is made and built by human work.

In this granted sojourn, the mortals themselves appear and precisely as those who respond to the unconcealed, for they bring to their proper appearance that which becomes present in this or that matter.

(Martin Heidegger, Sojourns: the journey to Greece, translated by John Panteleimon Manoussakis)

In closing, I wish to all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2012 Year!

With the Love of Greece!

A transitional government is not the right answer to Greece's problem

There is a new government in Greece.

There is a new Prime Minister in Greece.

The new Prime Minister is a technocrat, a banker and certainly not a politician of the mainstream political scene in Greece.

Spiros Papaloukas: Burned Village

Greece is in deep trouble.

Greece is almost bankrupt.

Greece is for all practical purposes bankrupt.

Spiros Papaloukas: Houses on the cliff

There is a sense of relief in the air.

European leaders are expressing their congratulations.

The Greek public hopes that the new Prime Minister will do good things.

But the mainstream political parties call this a “transitional” government.

Yannis Tsarouhis: Angel

A transition to what?

To elections in February 2012?

Quite frankly, I find this “transition” a totally unsatisfactory approach.

The country today does not need a “transitional” government.

The country today needs a real government.

Yannis Tsarouhis: Memento

The mainstream political parties of PASOK and New Democracy simply try to preserve their position in the political arena, even though it is quite clear that they have failed to perform adequately and serve the country when both of them were given their chance.

But by doing so they only serve their own narrow interests and do not give a damn about the country. They have failed the country, they have failed their constituencies and now perform this “transition” manouvre in order to recover from their wounds and return to claim power in the very near future.

This is why the new Government is a monster of 48 ministers!

This is the monster that the new Prime Minister, Mr Papademos must govern with.

Moaic from Hadrian's Villa

In my humble view he will fail if he continues on the path that has already been drawn out by PASOK and New Democracy.

Greece today needs a real Government, not the failed puppets of PASOK and New Democracy.

Mr Papademos has and will have for a short time power that he may not be aware of. He has the power to force the two mainstream parties to do whatever he tells them to do, whether they like it or not. This is a unique privilige that only Mr Papademos has and he should not squander it by playing small political games that are in any case useless and meaningless.

The Greek public today is aware of the bankruptcy of the mainstream political parties. The ultra right of Mr Karatzaferis is surely capitalizing on his success to be part of the “transitional” government, but he will never achieve primary status in the country. The parties of the left are well within the confines of their rigid thinking and they cannot go beyond. In a way, the majority of the Greek people today want to go ahead without political parties. Because they know that the political parties of the country have failed them.

Pantokrator with Angels

This is what Mr Papademos must understand and use to the full so that he governs until the country is in a stable condition and has a solid platform for growth and development. This will take at least three years to achieve. But must be done if we want Greece to have a future without serious complications.

This is also something that the Eurocrats must undserstand. Until now they have been playing with Mr George Papandreou, assuming that he will get the job done. They now know they were wrong. To their credit, they are the ones who pushed for the new government’s formation. However, they must not stop now. They must support and promote the idea that the new government needs to solve acute problems, keep Greece in the Euro while the haircut of maybe 80% takes place,  and then create the conditions for the economy’s growth and development.

This cannot be done by a country that will go to elections in a few months’ time, only to elect New Democracy who will also fail to do anything substantial.

Manouel Panselinos: Virgin with Child

The economic crisis of the country has exposed the huge political crisis, and the solution to this is not general elections. The solution to this is hard work under a solid government that has as its objective to save the country, not to restore the interests of the mainstream political parties and the bankrupt political system they represent.

Greece as Manon Lescaut in the Louisiana swamps: "sola, perduta, abbandonata"

In the early hours of Friday, 2nd September 2011, the attempt to rescue Greece from bancrupty suffered yet another setback. The discussions between the Greek Government and the “troika” of The Euroepan Commission, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Centeral Bank broke down and will commence after ten days.

Painting by Cy Twombly - from Mandy's blog "16 House"

The agreed measures for the rescue of Greece apparently do not work. The two sides (or four) do not agree on the reasons. The Greek Government represented by the Minister of Finance Mr. Venizelos is actually fudging the issue.

All the pain and misery these measures have imposed on the financially weaker members of the Greek Society like the low level  pensioners, appear to have been in vain. The situation is simply becoming worse. The country is now “officially” in deep recession, estimated to exceed 5% in 2011.

Painting by Cy Twombly - from Mandy's blog "16 House"

In addition to the now broadly recognized inefficiency of the Greek Government, we have the inability of the troika to make the necessary revisions and adjustments to the “measures” so that the “recipe” works. So Greece is lost in the midle of  its worst crisis after the second world war, not knowing what to do, and unfortunately, being unable to do anything (perduta).

Etching by Henry Moore

The situation gets a lot worse for Greece, as Portugal, Ireland and Spain have in a very short period of time have had positive results of their recovery efforts.

Greece is becoming increasingly isolated (sola).

The probability of Greece being abandoned by the European Community members is increasing to frightening levels (abbandonata).

Louise Bourgeois, Avenza Revisited II, 1968-1969.

The similarities between Greece and Manon Lescaut end here. Manon dies in the hands of her true love, Des Grieux. In the case of Greece, there is no one to die for. In addition, the end seems to be taking a long time. It is as if there is an Intensive Care Unit bed in the middle of the swamp, and some weird doctors have put the dying country in the respirator. The brain has stopped functioning, only the heart works with mechanical support.

Francis Bacon, Crucifixion, detail

Manon died a dignified death. May be they must let Greece off the respirator.

The Golden Coach: George Morfessis

The Coach – Ο Προπονητης

George Morfessis, the Coach of the Golden Team, said one day before the final game: “When our feet are firmly on the ground our mind can rach the sky”. Which is the secret of success according to him?

“Good chemistry, clear roles, talent, and good personalities”.

“Οταν πατάμε γερά στα πόδια μας το μυαλό μας μπορεί να φτάσει στον ουρανό”, δηλωσε ο Γιωργος Μορφεσης μια μερα πριν απο τον τελικο. Ποιο ειναι το μυστικο της επιτυχιας;

The first words of the Coach after the glorious win were: “There is good chemistry in the team. In addition to talent, the team comprises good people. This is our secret. In spite of the crises we have been through, all the problems have been dealt with in the best possible way. Sporting activity is molding our characters and makes us all better. ”

The Coach added:”Our last thoughts before the game were that anxiety would be high in the Chinese team, as it is a young team, and the house would be full of spectators,  while we had nothing to prove to anybody. This could only turn to our advantage. As the game was ending, I did not manage to think about something, as I was thrown in the water.”

Exsultate, Jubilate

The Way to Gold – Η πορεια προς το Χρυσο

After the golden win, Electra Psouni said: “When we started our games in the championship we said we have to go step-by-step. Our first goal was to make it in the last eight, and then in the last four. At first we did not believe we could make it to the top, but entering in the final game and capitalizing on the experience we have accumulated over the last few years we got rid of anxiety and decided to have fun. Deep inside we knew we would take gold. We were not going to compromise with anything less than that. Our joy is immense.”

Electra Psouni

Filio Manolioudaki, stated the following when the team made it to the last eight: “It is best that we are not viewed as favourites. Let them believe anything else about us. We are not going to get anxious about our next game. Our team hass proven substance. We are in the best teams of the world for the last few years. So let them believe whatever they like. The results will show what we really are. Today (21/7, game against Russia) we played very good defense and limited to five goals the team with the bast offence in the championship. This means a lot to me.”

Center forward Yiouli Lara said after the game with Brasil (19/7):

“It was our worst game and I am glad that it happened against Brasil and not another team. Sometimes we do not play well against weak teams, whist we play well against strong teams. When we consider the opponent within our reach we want to try new things. When they do not work we get anxious and lose control and concentration. The game on Thursday (21/7)against Russia is a game where we have to be our best.”

Alexandra Assimaki

After the big final, Alexandra Assimaki said:” The party has just begun. 6 seconds before the end we started crying. We have not yet realized what we hae achieved. We have achieved something big. Greek polo is at the top of the world, something that has never happened before. It is like a dream! We do not believe it is happening, but it is!”

The best seven – Η κορυφαια επταδα

Elena Kouvdou, the goalie of the team, and Antigone Roumbessi, made it to the best team of the championship, as voted by all the journalists covering the event.

There is Hope!

The young women of Greek polo are heroines. In a society that is in steep decline, without values and psychological complexes that could kep busy all the psychoanalysts of the world, these young women have refused to join the pack. They have fought the hard battle as a team, gave everything to the team, and never gave up. The success that has now come will not make them rich, will not make them TV personas, will not make them front page in the social magazines.

Their success is a private one, with a national cover. And I hope it remains like that.

Angelili Gerolymou

The team has soul and guts. It does not matter to me that they all happen to have Greek citizenship. This is only a cover, a filter. There is no national element in this success. There is only determination, proper organization, a fighting spirit against the difficulties and the odds. The women of this golden team have a vision, and the determination to become – and they became – something trully special.

It is this determination and resolve to succed that gives me a tremendous surge of optimism and enthusiasm. People can do great things even under the most difficult conditions. The Greek National Women’s Polo Team should be a reference for all those who just cry and complain in these days of crisis and financial turmoil. Everyone must ask themselves how thay can do better. We have had enough of indignation and accusation of others. It is now time to see ourselves and only ourselves in the mirror and come to terms with our personal story. Past, present and future.

Metron Ariston – Moderation is best

I do not know whether I am a biological descendant of Ancient Greeks.

Most likely, I will never find out.

The necessary tests are very expensive, and they will most likely be inconclusive, as science does not have the DNA of an ancient Greek in store.

Nevertheless, I can read and my memory is still ok, so I can recall one of the sayings of Ancients Greeks: “metron ariston”, or “moderation is best”.

This recollection came to me after the events of Monday, 18th July 2011 in Athens and Piraeus.

More than 4000 taxis blocked the Athens International airport and the Port of Piraeus on Monday morning until lunchtime, causing huge congestion in traffic and making the travellers’ lifes miserable indeed.

This move was the result of an impass in the discussions between the union of taxi owners and the Ministry of Transport, and a 48 hour strike that started at 0600 hrs on Monday 18th July 2011.

I am not a friend of Greek taxi owners. I have never been and most likely will never be.

However, I cannot accuse them for what happened, as they have been pushed against the wall.

And anyone in their position would react in a similar way.

It does not take a nuclear scientist to figure out why the taxi owners reacted the way they reacted.

The deregulation of professions is one of the measures to be taken by the Government in order to “open” the market of Greece to competition. In the context of this, the Ministry of Transport has drafted a Presidential Decree, according to which anyone who applies for a taxi license, assuming he/she has no criminal record and is a registered tax payer can get one, paying the nominal fee of 3000 Euros. The decree places no restriction on the number of licenses. May the best survive.

Now taking into account that the current market price of a  license is well in excess of 100,000 Euros, you get the reason of the taxi owners’ behavior. This is a “sudden death” approach to “modernization, and – of course – the victims are not taking it very well.

One might ask how important is the opening of the taxi owner’s profession for the Greek economy. It is obvious that the wealth generated by 50,000 taxis in Greece is not going to make or break the economy. The quality will differ, and may be we will get to see significant price increases, as today taxi in Greece is very cheap compared to other European countries.

But why is it so important for the Government to actually zero the value of a taxi license? Why not deregulate the profession in a gradual progressive way, that gives the owners some space to breath and eventually accept a compromise?

This is where the mind of the Ancient Greek stops.

And Moderation disappears.

The whole thing is extreme in any way you look at it, and the timing is even worse. It is moronic. Knowing that there would be problems, the wise guys of the Greek Government decided to push the decree now, at the height of the Summer Season, with the country ready to breath a sigh of relief from higher than expected tourist traffic.

Wonderful!!!!

I want to emphasize that I am not in any way condoning the actions of the taxi owners. Blocking airports and ports is not my idea of action. However, desperate people do desperate things. And the job of the elected Government is to act in ways that resolve issues rather than creating desperation. Politics is the art of compromise, not the art of pushing people over the cliff.

Which leads to totalitarianism.

In a rather naive way, the government tried to accuse the leading opposition party for the mess, implying that there was some type of moral support provided to the taxi owners. In other words, the moral accomplice to the crime committed against the Greek tourism and the Greek citizens was the leading opposition, New Democracy.

Nobody can take any of these stupidities seriously.

What worries me is that the Greek Government has apparently not understood the blunder they have committed. Instead of the Prime Minister bringing the “lost in the woods” Minister of Transport back to reality and directing him to enter immediately in negotiations with the taxi owners, the Government spokesman has announced that the Minister has the full support of the Prime Minister and nothing will change in the Decree of deregulation.

I do not know whether I am a descendant of Ancient Greeks, but I can assure you, the Greek Government of today definitely is not.

The Deus ex machina in the Greek drama is not a God

The Greek Economy has been sick for many years now. In the past 18 months this illness became critical and now the Greek Economy is bankrupt.

The Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens

The country owes to its creditors an amount of money that cannot be paid back under any stretch of the imagination.

Dionysus

However, the Greek Economy is hanging on, because there is a God out of the machine, who helps her stay afloat.

Moaic from Hadrian's Villa

The problem here is that there is no end. In a Greek tragedy, when the God out of the machine shows up we are very near the end of the play. He does what he does and off we go, the problems are solved, or pushed away, the heroes escape, and the play ends.

Maria Callas rehearsing Medea in the Epidavros theater

In the drama of the Greek Economy, the God out of the Machine seems to intervene every now and then, and the play goes on.

The source of the problem is that the God has no clear and steady objective. The God is moving with the tide, and is a political God, if there ever was one.

Statue of Zeus in Olympia

The solution to the problem is unclear. And this is because the politicians in charge of the European Community cannot plan anything beyond the short term. The European Institutions are also very weak and cannot sustain the huge pressures of the required solution.

Therefore they all resign to the inevitable “muddle through” model of crisis resolution, or rather crisis maintenance. (I highly recommend to those with interest in the art and science of muddling through to read the classic article of Professor Lindblom.)

It appears that the show will go on like this until 2013, when the proper support mechanisms will be in place to avert the ripple effect of Greece’s inevitable default, and the Greeks will be allowed to go to hell without disturbing the rest of Europe.

The reason that Greece is not defaulting now is because the European politicians are afraid of the potential ripple effect this default will have on Portugal, Ireland, and potentially Spain and Italy.

What makes the play a tragedy is that all the requirements the Europeans and the IMF define for the continuation of the bail out, are almost totally ineffective for Greece. A simple example is the taxation system. In the 18 months since the first memorandum (to provide 110 billions of Euros to Greece) the taxation system in Greece is moving from worse to worse. Citizens who always paid their taxes now pay a lot more, while the citizens who were not paying their taxes continue no to pay. This results in the widening of the operational deficit of the Greek national budget almost every month in 2011.

Unfortunately there is more. Not only the so called measures are wrong for Greece, they are destroying whatever is left of the social cohesion in the Greek Society at large. Greek society today resembles a boiling pot without a safety valve.

The situation is rapidly getting out of control, as the credibility of  the politicians is diminishing and people feel they are alone facing the looming disaster.

On the surface the so called technocrats of the European Union and the IMF seem to have a plan and know what they are doing. In essence, all they are doing is copying the recipes from their rather out of date recipe book. When things like that happen, it is the politicians’ job and duty to lead the course and find a way out. There is no such leadership in Greece today. The government went through a reshuffle a couple of days ago, only because there was nothing else to do. In addition, the EU/ECB/IMF troika have prepared the so called “medium-term” plan, which is basically another bunch of tax measures that will also fail.

We must brace ourselves for whatever comes next, and stop believing in any theory of “rational” behavior. Because the Greek problem is far too complicated even for the “instinctual” muddle through to work. And the God out of the machine is not a God, but a bunch of confused politicians cursing the moment they accepted Greece in the European and Monetary Union, and telling themselves that they only need to suffer until 2013 before they send the annoying Greeks and their problems to hell.

Pericles of Athens

How would Pericles react should he be with us today? I cannot say. But this is a problem that we, the Greek citizens have to solve ourselves. We have to invent the modern day Pericles and give him the support to take us out of the perilous straights before it is too late.

ΠΑΟ ΟΛΕ!!!!!!!!! 2 June 1971 Wembley Stadium: Ajax Amsterdam – PAO Athens 2-0

Ference Puskas 1927 - 2006

Vassilis Konstantinou
