Hellas, my Motherland – Μανα μου Ελλας

My motherland, Hellas (Greece), is on the edge of the cliff.

Even if Hellas does not fall the big fall today, she will remain dangerously close to the edge of the abyss for a long and unknown period of time.

The political and financial analysts and commentators have covered the crisis over and over again.

Today I remembered a song written by Stavros Xarchakos, in lyrics of Nikos Gatsos: “Hellas my motherland”.

It is part of the soundtrack of the Kostas Ferris movie “Rembetiko” (1983).

The lyrics are important, as in my view they contain the key that will unlock the gates of Hell or Paradise for Hellas.

(the lyrics and a video clip of the song can be found at the end of this article).

The lyrics of Gatsos take us from the start to the Minor Asia disaster of 1922, the uprooting of Hellenism from the western shores of Minor Asia (and more).

A few words later, we hear the painful direct truth: “the big words of lies”.

The lies, the fake dreams I could add, the tip of the ideological and psychological iceberg that leads to disaster.

Today we are in the midst of another disaster, that I would call “the disaster of the bliss bubble”.

In 1922 we saw the downfall of the “Great Idea” (Megali Idea).

Today we experience the downfall of the “Bliss Bubble” that dominated Greece since the early 1990’s.

In both downfalls, we, the Greek People, bear the major responsibility.

The so called “Great Powers” of course participated in the unfolding of the events, and played a role, but theirs was not the majr one.

We are the ones who committed suicide in both cases.

George Veltsos wrote in the newspaper “TO VIMA” on the 1st February 2012:

“When you have a knife on the table and instead of slicing your steak you stick it into your guts like Mishima did, you get a sense of belonging to the “beyond”, verging on megalomania”.

In addition to megalomania that provides the common psychological foundation to both disasters, I must add the political dimension of the “Bliss Bubble” model.

The political dimension of the “Bliss Bubble” is the “buyout”. Let me explain here the meaning of the word. It means a lot more than a mere transaction. It means that in addition to the transaction, you surrender unconditional control to the other party. The votes of the public, the behaviours, the consumer patterns, have all been built on the dominant phenomenon of the “buyout”. As an example, the voter is bought out by the candidate member of parliament: the “bought” vote becomes the voter son’s or daughter’s entry ticket to the safe heaven of the public sector.

This phenomenon could not have been dominant in Greece without political support and full endorsement. It is therefore a political phenomenon with economic aspects

This phenomenon that moulded the dominant social political and economic behaviour in modern Greece is at the root of the full scale social and political degeneration that we experience today.

Μπορουμε λοιπον να κανουμε μια νεα αρχη; Μπορουμε να ξεφυγουμε απο την περιδινηση των επαλληλων καταστροφων και να χαραξουμε μια νεα πορεια;

Can we make a new start? Can we escape from the downward spiral of the two consecutive disasters and chart a new course?

The answer is not in the hands of the already outdated politicians of all parties. The answer is in our hands.

Ας αναφερω ενα απλο παραδειγμα: Το μεγεθος της αγορας κρεατων στην Ελλαδα ειναι περιπου 1,4 δις ΕΥΡΩ. Απο αυτα, 836 εκατομυρια ΕΥΡΩ εισαγονται. Η αυταρκεια της χωρας σε χοιρινο κρεας ειναι περιπου 30%, σε βοειο δε μολις 14%. Τα συμπερασματα βγαινουν απο μονα τους. Αλλα οι πραξεις δεν μπορει να γινουν μονες τους. Δεν υπαρχει το αεναον παρα μονον στην ποιηση και την τεχνη. Θα πανε τα νεα παιδια, οι νεοι Ελληνες και Ελληνιδες να γινουν κτηνοτροφοι; Θα δεχθουν να δουλεψουν σκληρα και να εχουν ενα καλο βιοτικο επιπεδο χωρις χωρις να να γινουν πλουσιοι;

Let me offer a simple example. The meat consumption in Greece has a value of 1,4 billion Euros. Out of this, 836 millions are imported. The self sufficiency of the country in pork meat is only at 30%, while in beef it drops to 14%. You can draw your on conclusions. But actions cannot happen by themselves. Are the young Greeks going to raise cattle? Are they going to work hard and make a good living without becoming “rich”? That is abandoning the “Bliss Bubble” dream?

Δεν εχει νοημα να συνεχισω να αναφερω παραδειγματα. Ο νεος και η νεα θα πρεπει να παρει πρωτοβουλιες, να προσπαθησει, να απαιτησει, να επιχειρησει, και να πορευθει στον δρομο που δεν εχει σιγουρα αποτελεσματα. Προσανατολιζουμε τους νεους μας προς κατι τετοιο;

There is no point in bringing forward more examples. The young – in spirit – must take initiatives, make efforts in the direction of developing the economy, demand from the state and EU authorities real and not token support, and march on the road that offers rewards and risks at the same time. Are we going to encourage our youth to take this road?

It is clear that we cannot all succeed in everything. But we must try, putting insecurities on the side, albeit acknowledging them. The megalomania that I have mentioned in a previous section is linked to the immense insecurity that engulfs Greek society. It is time to get rid of it, like we, the very same people, do when we are abroad, in foreign lands, across five continents. Where we take risks, we work hard, and we make it to the top of whatwever we do.

This is the key that will open the Gates of Heaven. We need to take the road to an existence based on self knowledge and self determination, throwing away insecurity and fear.

This is the end of lies. We have to admit it to ourselves first, face reality and start living a real life, not an artificial one, no matter how painful this might be. This will decide the future of our country. This will also rebuild our deconstructed society.

Only through the experience of Delos did the journey to Greece became a sojourn, cleared dwelling by that which Αληθεια is.

Delos itself is that field of unconcealed hiddenness that accords sojourn: first to φυσις, to the pure and self-sheltered rise of mountains and islands, sky and sea, plants and animals, the rise where each thing appears in its strict type but also in its gently suspended form.

In the sojourn granted by αλήθεια the έργον appears as well: everything that is made and built by human work.

In this granted sojourn, the mortals themselves appear and precisely as those who respond to the unconcealed, for they bring to their proper appearance that which becomes present in this or that matter.

(Martin Heidegger, Sojourns: the journey to Greece, translated by John Panteleimon Manoussakis)

In closing, I wish to all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2012 Year!

With the Love of Greece!

A Cretan Madonna in Venice: Mesopanditissa in Santa Maria della Salute (Saint Mary of Health)

JMW Turner: Santa Maria della Salute

Today I want to honor the centuries’ old ties between Byzantium and Venice, by kneeling in front of the “Mesopanditissa” Madonna, a 12th or 13th century Byzantine icon that was brought to Venice in 1669, after Candia (Herakleion) fell to the Ottoman Turks. The picture is kept in the main altar of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute (Holy Mary of the Health). Lets start with the historical background.

Santa Maria della Salute is one of the jewels of Venice. Baldassare Longhena was 32 years old when he won a competition in 1631 to design a shrine honoring the Virgin Mary for saving Venice from a plague that in the space of two years (1629-30) killed 47,000 residents, or one-third the population of the city. Outside, this ornate white Istrian stone octagon is topped by a colossal cupola with snail-like ornamental buttresses and a baroque facade; inside are a polychrome marble floor and six chapels.

The Byzantine icon above the main altar has been venerated as the Madonna della Salute (Madonna of Health) since 1670, when Francesco Morosini brought it here from Crete. The icon and other holy relics, were brought to Venice by Morosini when Crete fell to the Ottoman Turks.

It was the jewel of the Church of Saint Titus in the center of Candia, today’s Irakleion. Morosini also brought to Venice the remains of Saint Titus. They were kept in Saint Mark’s Basilica until 1966, when they were returned to Crete.

Above it is a sculpture showing Venice on her knees to the Madonna as she drives the wretched plague from the city.

I must confess that the baroque sculptures surrounding the Madonna did not impress me, but they are not in any way obstructing the view of the magnificent icon.

The Madonna is serene, understanding, can absorb the pain of the whole world. The Holy Child is contemplative.

The icon is at home in the magnificent Church. It stands next to Titian, Giordano, Tintoretto, like they are its most natural companion.

This is the glory of Byzantium, glory that remains alive and strong in Venice. More on the subject will follow.

Greece as Manon Lescaut in the Louisiana swamps: "sola, perduta, abbandonata"

In the early hours of Friday, 2nd September 2011, the attempt to rescue Greece from bancrupty suffered yet another setback. The discussions between the Greek Government and the “troika” of The Euroepan Commission, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Centeral Bank broke down and will commence after ten days.

Painting by Cy Twombly - from Mandy's blog "16 House"

The agreed measures for the rescue of Greece apparently do not work. The two sides (or four) do not agree on the reasons. The Greek Government represented by the Minister of Finance Mr. Venizelos is actually fudging the issue.

All the pain and misery these measures have imposed on the financially weaker members of the Greek Society like the low level  pensioners, appear to have been in vain. The situation is simply becoming worse. The country is now “officially” in deep recession, estimated to exceed 5% in 2011.

Painting by Cy Twombly - from Mandy's blog "16 House"

In addition to the now broadly recognized inefficiency of the Greek Government, we have the inability of the troika to make the necessary revisions and adjustments to the “measures” so that the “recipe” works. So Greece is lost in the midle of  its worst crisis after the second world war, not knowing what to do, and unfortunately, being unable to do anything (perduta).

Etching by Henry Moore

The situation gets a lot worse for Greece, as Portugal, Ireland and Spain have in a very short period of time have had positive results of their recovery efforts.

Greece is becoming increasingly isolated (sola).

The probability of Greece being abandoned by the European Community members is increasing to frightening levels (abbandonata).

Louise Bourgeois, Avenza Revisited II, 1968-1969.

The similarities between Greece and Manon Lescaut end here. Manon dies in the hands of her true love, Des Grieux. In the case of Greece, there is no one to die for. In addition, the end seems to be taking a long time. It is as if there is an Intensive Care Unit bed in the middle of the swamp, and some weird doctors have put the dying country in the respirator. The brain has stopped functioning, only the heart works with mechanical support.

Francis Bacon, Crucifixion, detail

Manon died a dignified death. May be they must let Greece off the respirator.

Objects that tell a story: (1) Carved Rosewood Sofa

Today I start a new series of posts, on objects that tell a story.

The first object is a carved rosewood sofa that I inherited from my mother, who died almost two years ago, on 5th August 2009. Her memory brought back to my mind this storyof the sofa.

The sofa was bought by my maternal grand father, Spiros, at the beginning of the 20th century. It was hand made in France and imported in Greece, where it took a prime position in the seating area of my grandfather’s house in Athens.

When the Germans occupied Athens in 1941, a Jewish family of friends came to my grandfather’s house in Koukaki, a neighbourhood near the Acropolis in Athens, and asked for help as they were persecuted by the occupying Germans.

My grandfather and grandmother both decided to help their Jewish friends. The Jewish family stayed with my grandfather’s family until the liberation of Athens in 1944. Due to lack of space, my mother, a young woman at the time, had to abandon her bedroom and sleep on the sofa.

This is why my mother was always calling this sofa “my little bed”.

After the liberation the family of friends left Greece and ended up in Israel. The two families lost touch until sometime in the early 80’s, when my mother got a telephone call from the elder son of the family. He was visiting Greece and wanted to see her. They met, like they were together the day before, although so many years had gone by. Time for them would be frozen, in the house in Koukaki.

Alain Resnais' and Marguerite Duras' "Hiroshima Mon Amour"

‘I remember Hiroshima’
‘You remember nothing’

“You saw nothing in Hiroshima. Nothing.”

” I saw everything. Everything.”

It has been quite a while that I wanted to write about Alain Resnais’ movie “Hiroshima Mon Amour”.

Alain Resnais

I get to do it today, 66 years after the bomb drop that marked the history of the world.

On the surface, it is a love affair with the city of Hiroshima and her people providing the background.

A French actress doing a film in Hiroshima meets a Japanese architect and they have sex. As time goes by, “He” asks “Her” to stay in Hiroshima forever. There are elements of “falling in love” “She” denies. In the process, “She” brings forward a painful memory that has marked her life. Her love affair with a German soldier during the war. He was killed the day before the liberation of France, and she has been marked by this relationship, both literally and metaphorically.

She appears to be mourning forever. Is she able to love?

How can she love when she does not admit that she is full of memories of her first love?

She has never told anyone about the German soldier, only the Japanese man.

The traditional reading of the film ascerts that the woman had forgotten and/or repressed the memory of her German lover until she met the Japanese man, who made her remember him. I beg to differ. In my view the woman is full of memories of her German lover, and until she met the Japanese man in Hiroshima she was not admitting it. Repressing a memory does not equate forgetting.

The sense of breakthrough that comes in Hiroshima is that the woman is able to reminisce and talk about the German, and all the horror that followed his death. The issue has never been forgetting. The issue was the continuous mourning and draining of psychological energy, was the open gaping wound in her existence, that made her until Hiroshima unble to admit and talk about what had happened to her.

Only by talking about it she has been able to start playing with the idea of loving again, which is metaphorically the same as staying in Hiroshima and not going back home to her husband.

But this is not an easy game. The inner conflict is strong. She wants to stay, she wants to love, she wants to frame her memory of the German soldier in the reality of her Japanese lover, but she cannot do it.

The time frame of the movie is varied.

In current time, it covers 24 hours.

In past time, it covers more 20 years.

This variance also applies ot the location.

The current location of the movie is Hiroshima, in Japan.

The past location is Nevers in France.

At the end of the movie, the woman gives the man the name “Hi-ro-shi-ma” and the man names the woman “Ne-vers”.

Julia Kristeva has written an essay “The Malady of Grief: Duras”, published in her collection “Black Sun”.

According to Kristeva, Duras’ story is about the meeting of two disasters:

“Nevers here, Hiroshima there. However intense it may be in its unnameable silence, love is henceforth in suspence, pulverized, atomized. To love from her point of view, is to love a dead person. The body of her new lover merges with the corpse of her first love, which she had covered with her own body, a day and a night, and whose blood she savored…. But the very dynamic Japanese engineer is also marked by death because he necessarily bears the moral scars of the atomic death of which his countrymen were the first victims.”

Marguerite Duras

Dumas comments in her scenario for the movie: “All one can do is to speak of the impossibility of speaking of Hiroshima. The knowledge of Hiroshima is something that must be set down, a priori, as being an exemplary delusionof the mind”.

Golo Mann: The History of Germany since 1789 – Part I

Born Angelus Gottfried Thomas Mann, he was the third son of the novelist Thomas Mann and his wife Katia Mann.

One of six children of Thomas Mann, he described the drawbacks of growing up with a famous novelist for a father.

Katia Mann with her six children

“We almost always had to keep quiet — in the morning because our father was working, in the afternoon because he first read, then napped, and toward evening, because he was again occupied with serious matters. And there would be a terrible outburst if we disturbed him, all the more hurtful because we almost never provoked him intentionally.”

(Source: The New York Times )

I got to know him because of his father, one of the giants of world lieterature, and bought his book “The History of Germnay since 1789” years ago, when I was living in England, and forgotabout it withour reading it. All of a sudden, the book appeared in front of me one afternoon as if it had a voice, and without any further delay I Started reading it. It was an instant love affair, that continues until today, after almost two months of reading it.

Golo Mann

In today’s post I want to start sharing with you some quotes from the book, which I consider one of the best history books on Europe. The original’s title is “Deutsche Geschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts”, first published in German in 1958. I use the English translation by Marian Jackson, reprinted by Penguin Books in 1990. For ease of reference, in each quote I will use  the page number of the 1990 reprint.

There will be two parts, the first covering the period from Napoleon to the end of Bismarck’s rule.

I am not aiming at reproducing the great intensity of the book, or summarize it. All I want is to present some elements of the work that are representative of its author and his views, which I find stimulating and challenging.

As an introduction to the period from 1789 to 1890, I offer the following timeline.

1813: Battle of the Nations at Leipzig; Napoleon is defeated

1848: a year of European revolutions; the Frankfurt Parliament convenes

1863: the Social Democratic Party of Germany is formed

1866: the kingdom of Prussia defeats the Austrian Empire in the battle of Koeniggaetz

1870: Bismarck emerges victorious from short war against the French

King Wilhelm of Prussia is proclaimed German Emperor

1871, January 18: GERMAN UNIFICATION – King Wilhelm of Prussia is proclaimed “German Emperor” in the Hall of Mirrors at the Chateau des Versailles. The German Empire is a confederation of 25 constituent states

1871: Bismarck becomes the first Chancellor of unified Germany

1875: Thomas Mann is born

1890: Bismarck resigns; Caprivi is sworn in a the next Chancellor

1898: Bismarck dies

Nations have always managed to find some rational necessity, some ideological reason for murdering each other (p. 28)

Nothing in history really starts at one particular moment (p.38)

The people’s of Europe have always learned from each other, and imitation is not necessarily follish (p. 59)

The moments in history in which noble enthusiasm reigns are short and one must be grateful for any lasting achievement from such a period (p. 67)

The mind of the individual is not a textbook, it is full of contradictions (p. 71)

… but eras follow each other without a break and clear divisions exist only in our minds (p. 85)

Ferdinand Lassalle

Our age is confused and devoid of ideas; it does not know what it wants and therefore anything seems possible (p.121)

A man without a home, without roots, cannot be effective, but he can see and speak, and that is what Heine did. (p. 142)

It is characteristic of men who have been disfranchised to take more than their share when they are liberated and to do to others what has been done to them (p. 169)

What anyway did right mean where interests conflicted, where two peoples were imbued with equal determination to survice? (p.171)

Anger unsupported by power can achieve nothing (p.178)

“The great questions of the age”, said Bismarck in 1862, “are not decided by speeches and majority decisions – that was the big mistake of 1848 and 1849 – but by blood and iron”. (p.204)

Ferdinand Lassalle once said: “Basically constitutional questions are not questions of law but of power; a country’s real constitution exists only in the actual prevailing political conditions. Written constitutions are only of value and permanence if they exactly express the existing distribution of power in sociaty”. (p. 214)

It is wrong entirely to condemn any class of human beings. The world is not a just place and when just men reach the top they are usually not as just as they promised to be while they were oppressed (p. 215)

Some men who are at odds with their age show that they belong to it by the extent of their opposition to it. (p.236)

Nevertheless he (Schopenhauer) was a Christian and distinguished between two basic tendencies in Christianity: an optimistic one promising paradise on earth, which he regarded as Jewish in origin, and an ascetic one proclaiming the misery and treachery of this world, teaching resignation and compassion. Something of this, which he found best expressed in the pantheism of the Indians, is present in his own work, and that is why a man who hated politics and modern society, a Christian commmunist like Leo Tolstoy, looked up to Schopenhauer as his master. (p. 239-240)

Yet he (Schopenhauer) wrote more beautiful and more forceful German than anybody who came after him; from the depths of German tradition, mysticism, romanticism and music came the moods which he skillfully combined into the four movements of his great symphony. (p. 240)

Arthur Schopenhauer

Everything that he (Bismarck) had tried to prevent or to delay, the worst that he feared, happened in the end: world wars, world revolution, the literal desctruction of the state which he idolized, with the result that the younger generation growing up today hardly knows the name of Prussia. Moreover, this happened not so very long after his death. People who knew him well actually experienced it; for example the wife of his son, who poisoned herself in 1945 a few hours before soldiers of the Red Army reached the family castle. A fate which serves to illustrate the futility of all political endeavour. Or should we say the futility of false, unjust and in the in the last resort unnatural political endeavour? Our story must seek to answer this question, although there will not be a clear yes or no. (p. 261-262)

He (Bismarck) denied energetically that Austria in the Balkans was defending German interests against Russia: “The mouth of the Danube is of very little interest to Germany”. Prussia had no reason to help Austria “to procure a few stinking Wallachians”. (p. 271)

His (Bismarcck’s) great achievement was not that he created German unity; that had been longed for and talked about for fifty years. What makes his achievement so very clever, daring and unnatural is the fact that he brought about German unity without the elements associated with it for fifty years: parliamentary rule, democracy, and demagogy. (p.287)

Bismarck saw the possible when it appeared and rejected the impossible. …If all but one player play a half-hearted game, the one who takes his game seriously is likely to win. (p.288)

The superior opponent attacks, and the attacker is almost always superiro; but he must know how to stop while he is still superiro. (p. 294)

Bismarck did not believe in elaborate constitutions. Like Lassalle he believed in the reality which alone would show what the constitution was and could be. (p. 307)

Often we are most eloquent about the virtues we lack…….The nature of politics does not permit a vacuum of power. (p. 312)

Payment for political services must be received in advance, not in retrospect. (p. 315)

But the frontiers between defence and attack are uncertain; and once the monster of war has been born it starts a life of its own not easily controllable by party political strategy. (p. 319)

Fuerst Otto von Bismarck
Fuerst Otto von Bismarck

Too much elaborate theory may harm a cause, as it has probably harmed American constitutional life to the present day. Too much brutal pragmatism has the same effect. The Reich suffered because bits that did not make a whole were hastily and roughly thrown together, the Prussian military monarchy, federation and universal suffrage. (p. 329)

Historical power is never without historical guilt (p. 345)

But the element which Stoecker (Adolf Stoecker was the court chaplain to Kaiser Wilhelm II, and founded the Christian Social Party in the 1870s) knew how to mobilize and which remained a sinister driving force in German politics was anti-semitism. It was an age-old, evil force which ahd existed in latent form from Christian, even pre-Christian, times onwards, concealed or under control and almost forgotten, only to break out again into brutal misdeeds. (p. 391)

For twenty -five years Bismarck had been Europe’s first statesman, at times its arbiter. His personal qualities entitled him to a place among the ranks of the great rulers of the past, Wallenstein, Cromwell and Napoleon. But whereas in comparable crises they did not hesitate to resort to extremes, to civil war and rebellion, all the Prussian Prime Minister could do was obediently to draft his letter of resignation (Bismarck resigned on 18 March 1890) the moment an undeserving young man asked him to do so. (p. 410-411)

The Deus ex machina in the Greek drama is not a God

The Greek Economy has been sick for many years now. In the past 18 months this illness became critical and now the Greek Economy is bankrupt.

The Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens

The country owes to its creditors an amount of money that cannot be paid back under any stretch of the imagination.

Dionysus

However, the Greek Economy is hanging on, because there is a God out of the machine, who helps her stay afloat.

Moaic from Hadrian's Villa

The problem here is that there is no end. In a Greek tragedy, when the God out of the machine shows up we are very near the end of the play. He does what he does and off we go, the problems are solved, or pushed away, the heroes escape, and the play ends.

Maria Callas rehearsing Medea in the Epidavros theater

In the drama of the Greek Economy, the God out of the Machine seems to intervene every now and then, and the play goes on.

The source of the problem is that the God has no clear and steady objective. The God is moving with the tide, and is a political God, if there ever was one.

Statue of Zeus in Olympia

The solution to the problem is unclear. And this is because the politicians in charge of the European Community cannot plan anything beyond the short term. The European Institutions are also very weak and cannot sustain the huge pressures of the required solution.

Therefore they all resign to the inevitable “muddle through” model of crisis resolution, or rather crisis maintenance. (I highly recommend to those with interest in the art and science of muddling through to read the classic article of Professor Lindblom.)

It appears that the show will go on like this until 2013, when the proper support mechanisms will be in place to avert the ripple effect of Greece’s inevitable default, and the Greeks will be allowed to go to hell without disturbing the rest of Europe.

The reason that Greece is not defaulting now is because the European politicians are afraid of the potential ripple effect this default will have on Portugal, Ireland, and potentially Spain and Italy.

What makes the play a tragedy is that all the requirements the Europeans and the IMF define for the continuation of the bail out, are almost totally ineffective for Greece. A simple example is the taxation system. In the 18 months since the first memorandum (to provide 110 billions of Euros to Greece) the taxation system in Greece is moving from worse to worse. Citizens who always paid their taxes now pay a lot more, while the citizens who were not paying their taxes continue no to pay. This results in the widening of the operational deficit of the Greek national budget almost every month in 2011.

Unfortunately there is more. Not only the so called measures are wrong for Greece, they are destroying whatever is left of the social cohesion in the Greek Society at large. Greek society today resembles a boiling pot without a safety valve.

The situation is rapidly getting out of control, as the credibility of  the politicians is diminishing and people feel they are alone facing the looming disaster.

On the surface the so called technocrats of the European Union and the IMF seem to have a plan and know what they are doing. In essence, all they are doing is copying the recipes from their rather out of date recipe book. When things like that happen, it is the politicians’ job and duty to lead the course and find a way out. There is no such leadership in Greece today. The government went through a reshuffle a couple of days ago, only because there was nothing else to do. In addition, the EU/ECB/IMF troika have prepared the so called “medium-term” plan, which is basically another bunch of tax measures that will also fail.

We must brace ourselves for whatever comes next, and stop believing in any theory of “rational” behavior. Because the Greek problem is far too complicated even for the “instinctual” muddle through to work. And the God out of the machine is not a God, but a bunch of confused politicians cursing the moment they accepted Greece in the European and Monetary Union, and telling themselves that they only need to suffer until 2013 before they send the annoying Greeks and their problems to hell.

Pericles of Athens

How would Pericles react should he be with us today? I cannot say. But this is a problem that we, the Greek citizens have to solve ourselves. We have to invent the modern day Pericles and give him the support to take us out of the perilous straights before it is too late.

Γιατι γραφετε;

The Kaisariani Monastery, near Athens, Greece – Η Μονη Καισαριανης
