The enemies of Hellas – Greece: Part II

Every human being has his own particular web of associations for identifying and interpreting reality, which, most often, instinctively and unthinkingly, he superimposes on every set of circumstances. Frequently, however, those external circumstances do not conform with, or fit, the structure of our webs, and then we can misread the unfamiliar reality, and interpret its elements incorrectly…
— Ryszard Kapuscinski, “Travels with Herodotus” (2007)

This is the second part of an attempt to identify the enemies of Greece. I hope it is the last, because if there are too many enemies, it will take ages to hunt them down and destroy them. On the other hand, life is boring without enemies. How are we going to spend our time? Especially now that we have no money to spend, and shopping is out of the question, travelling is out of the question, and so on, we might have a cost free entertaining and uplifting activity chasing and obliterating our enemies. Time will tell.

I remind you that according to my methodology, I identify the enemies of Greece indirectly, by focusing (not always) on the political parties, and making the inference that an enemy of our political parties is also an enemy of Greece.

New Democracy

New Democracy is the party of the traditional populist right.

They see “The Drachma Club” or “The Drachma Lobby” as enemies of Greece. These are people who are betting on Greece returning to the drachma, so that everything is devalued by at least 80% and they – the club members or lobbyists – buy everything for nothing, as they already have their huge fortunes in hard currency somewhere in the vaults of the world.

Another great enemy of Greece is [The “Little Match Stick Girl”}, also known as [The dangerous and irresponsible Mr Tsipras], the head of the SYRIZA party. The leader of New Democracy has created this powerful metaphor, of Mr Tsipras as the little match girl in a storage room full of dynamite. The question for us, ordinary citizens now is “how are we going to neutralize the little girl?”

Unfortunately I do not have an answer, but I am tempted to remember the proven strategy “nuke them till they glow, they shoot them in the dark”. Although I am not very keen on physical violence, as I definitely prefer psychological violence, I must confess that the “nuke them…” approach has an eternally alluring quality for me.

It might be a good idea for me to suggest to Mr Samaras to call Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, or even meet him (last time I saw him he was somewhere in the jungle of the Golden Traingle), to get some advice on how to best neutralize the little match stick girl.

Now that I have said that, I consider it absolutely brilliant, because a true political leader is nothing without a seasoned in battle military adviser.

Should Colonel Kurtz be unavailable, it might be best to contact Alexander Haig. I do not want to brag about it, but I have met the General at a conference in Paris in 2002. He delivered a speech on how executives should act. Not that I am an executive, but I was there anyway, so I got to hear him speak, and then I shook his hand. Oh my!!!!

Finally, the New Democracy has identified “The hooded men (and women?)” as a big enemy of Greece. These are people who wear a hood, and then run around trying to find a reason to exist. they are people in a huge existential crisis. New Democracy does not like them because they lower the morale of the population in the big urban centers, where the existential crisis is at its peak. And as you know, morale is everything, it is the decisive factor. And I understand the outrage of New Democracy.

These people are losers, and are dragging all of  us down with them!!!! No pasaran!!!!

PASOK

PASOK is suffering from Dissociative identity disorder (DID, also known as Multiple Personality Disorder.

Quoting from Wikipedia:

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) its essential feature “…is the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states…that recurrently take control of behavior.” The diagnosis requires that at least two personalities (one may be the host) routinely take control of the individual’s behavior with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness; in addition, symptoms cannot be the temporary effects of drug use or a general medical condition. Memory loss will occur in those with DID when an alternate part of the personality becomes dominant. DID is less common than other dissociative disorders, occurring in approximately 10% of dissociative disorder cases and .5-1% of the general population.Women tend to outnumber men in this disorder, resulting in about a 9:1 ratio.

Diagnosis is often difficult as there is considerable co-morbidity with other conditions and many symptoms overlap with other types of mental illness.

Individuals diagnosed with DID frequently report severe physical and sexual abuse as a child. The etiology of DID has been attributed to the experience of pathological levels of stress which disrupts normal functioning and forces some memories, thoughts and aspects of personality from consciousness, though an alternative explanation is that dissociated identities are the iatrogenic effect of certain psychotherapeutic practices or increased popular interest.

All of the above is an extensive scientific quotation that I will ow interpret in my simplistic way.

The best proof of the dissociation of identity is the loss of memory.

PASOK has done a lot of things during the last three years. But the dissociated PASOK does not remember any of them.

It is like they were done by somebody else. It is like they were out, and all of a sudden they are back and they do not recognize what has happened.

If this is not scary, what could be?

We have a body that has the capacity through the dissociated identity disorder to continuously create new identities, each of which knows not what the others are doing.

It is clear that this dissociation of identity is an enemy of Greece, as it takes away from the country one its best children.

I am talking of course abour George Papandreou. PASOK had to sacrifice this child of hers, as it were trapped inside this dissociated body of PASOK.

The historical implications are huge, as among other things the country may miss the gigantic opportunity that George Papandreou had afforded to her to legalize marijuana in order to boost the economy and the country’s exports. What a shame!

How can a country deal with a psychological disease? That is becoming such a huge problem? Do we know from the medical profession whether death is the cure of the disease? Or do the DID dead continue to leave and return as jombies forever living dead to torture the country?

I strongly suggest before people bath their hands in the blood of PASOK to consult with the doctors.

Democratic Left

The Democratic left is a relatively new (two years’ old) party. The party has been described as a combination of a SYRIZA spin off and a PASOK spin off. The spin offs occurred at distinct moments of time, and there appears to be no design of this merge of splinter groups. However, design or not, this appears to be the case today.

I must confess I quite like the Democratic Left’s leader. He is a nice chap, and his use of the Greek language is decent, a rarity these days. The rest is complicated, as he takes ages to arrive at a conclusion, and when he does it is not clear what the conclusion is.

This is definitely not the result of the leader’s inability to articulate. It is most likely the result of the party’s blurred identity.

PASOK suffers from the dissociated identity disorder, and the Democratic Left from the blurred identity disorder!

The good news for the country and the Democratic Left is that their blurred identity will not necessarily cause a major problem, unless they will become the critical factor in the formation of a coalition government after the 17th June election. But we have to wait for this.

KKE – The Greek Communist Party

No identity disorder here!!!!

There is only one enemy: Capitalism. And another, Capital, and another, Capitalists.

All of these bad guys are against the workers, and as Greece is a workers’ country, they are all enemies of Greece.

But the biggest enemy of KKE these days is not capitalism. It is Alexis Tsipras and SYRIZA. No need to say more. And if you do not understand what I am saying, you are also an enemy!!!!

Health

Yet another violation of my methodology. Fully justified though.

The Health of the Greek people, is being viciously attacked.

They (our enemies) are spraying us with all sorts of things. Every day airplanes of all kinds fly our friendly blue skies and spray us with all types of chemicals.

According to my informers, and secret reports that I have received, the most common substance used is a personality change agent. Once you inhale it you become a servile and docile citizen.

The originators of this act are not known yet. Rumours abound. All I can say is that we will find them, drag them to Constitution Square, and offer them ouzo!!!

Another way they are attacking our health is by importing into Greece HIV positive women who have unprotected sex with innocent, unsuspecting Greeks.

These women attract the men by promising them that they will solve all their problems, as their body is blessed by the waters of a holy river in India, where they went on holiday some time ago.

Unfortunately they are lying. Most of them come from the secret service of a neighbouring small country that is trying to destabilize Greece. They will not succeed!!!

Conclusion

Concluding this two-part monumental article, that is going to be read by hundreds of thousands of citizens of the world, I would like to offer the distilled wisdom that I have plenty in my inner self. Here it comes.

We should not be concerned about the Turks, the Albanians, the “FYROM-Macedonians”, the sionists, the Bankers, the Americans, the Russians, the Chinese, the pawnbrokers, the freemasons, the hedge funds, the spies, the secret agents, the chemical spray, AIDS, and so on.

We should not be concerned about our own failings of character, and the centuries old fratricide.

Asteroid Hermes’ elliptical orbit (red) brings it to the inner solar system every 777 days

Our biggest enemy, who eventually is going to bring our downfall is asteroid Hermes. Let me quote extensively from NASA’s website, to build my argument and at the same time educate all of you who think that I am losing my marbles and talking nonsense.

“It is almost accepted today, that an asteroid hit Earth 65 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs. But in 1980 when scientists Walter and Luis Alvarez first suggested the idea to a gathering at the American Association for Advancement of Sciences, their listeners were skeptical. Asteroids hitting Earth? Wiping out species? It seemed incredible.

At that very moment, unknown to the audience, an asteroid named Hermes halfway between Mars and Jupiter was beginning a long plunge toward our planet. Six months later it would pass 300,000 miles from Earth’s orbit, only a little more than the distance to the Moon. Rhetorically speaking, this would have made a great point in favor of the Alvarezes. Curiously, though, no one noticed the flyby.

1980 wasn’t the first time Hermes had sailed by unremarked. Hermes is a good-sized asteroid, easy to see, and a frequent visitor to Earth’s neighborhood. Yet astronomers had gotten into the habit of missing it. How this came to be is a curious tale, which begins in Germany just before World War II:

On Oct. 28, 1937, astronomer Karl Reinmuth of Heidelberg noticed an odd streak of light in a picture he had just taken of the night sky. About as bright as a 9th magnitude star, it was an asteroid, close to Earth and moving fast–so fast that he named it Hermes, the herald of Olympian gods. On Oct. 30, 1937, Hermes glided past Earth only twice as far away as the Moon, racing across the sky at a rate of 5 degrees per hour. Nowadays only meteors and Earth-orbiting satellites move faster.

Plenty of asteroids were known in 1937, but most were plodding members of the asteroid belt far beyond Mars. Hermes was different. It visited the inner solar system. It crossed Earth’s orbit. It proved that asteroids could come perilously close to our planet. And when they came, they came fast.

Reinmuth observed Hermes for five days. Then, to make a long story short, he lost it.

Hermes approaches Earth’s orbit twice every 777 days. Usually our planet is far away when the orbit crossing happens, but in 1937, 1942, 1954, 1974 and 1986, Hermes came harrowingly close to Earth itself. We know about most of these encounters only because Lowell Observatory astronomer Brian Skiff re-discovered Hermes… on Oct. 15, 2003. Astronomers around the world have been tracking it carefully ever since. Orbit-specialists Steve Chesley and Paul Chodas of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have used the new observations to trace Hermes’ path backwards in time, and so they identified all the unnoticed flybys.

“It’s a little unnerving,” says Chodas. “Hermes has sailed by Earth so many times and we didn’t even know it.”

“Hermes’ orbit is the most chaotic of all near-Earth asteroids,” he adds. This is because the asteroid is so often tugged by Earth’s gravity. Hermes has occasional close encounters with Venus, too. In 1954 the asteroid flew by both planets. “That was a real orbit scrambler,” Chodas says. Frequent encounters with Earth and Venus make it hard to forecast Hermes’ path much more than a century in advance. The good news is that “Hermes won’t approach Earth any closer than about 0.02 AU within the next hundred years.” We’re safe for now.

I do not think we are safe!!!!

Hermes will fall on Greece, more specifically on the island of Yaros, in the very near future. I cannot predict exactly when, but I may be able to do so, after I visit my personal (mis)fortune teller, Mrs. Regina.

In any case, I rest my case, and cry out loud: “you have been warned!!!!!”

Objects that tell a story (2): My maternal grandfather’s 1915 travel document to Russia

Introduction

Digging into a box with documents and photos I found in pieces a travel document belonging to my maternal grandfather, Spyridon Mavrogenes. I assembled it in one piece and present it as an object that tells a story.

Spyridon G Mavrogenes

Spyridon Mavrogenes was born in 1878. At the age of 37, in the year 1915, he travelled to Russia. I presume the trip had to do with his profession, which was to export olive oil and other agricultural products like Corinthian raisin (stafida) from the Peloponese to various countries.

Europe and the Balkans in 1915

In 1915 Europe and the Balkans were in turmoil. I have picked some morcels from the press of the period.

The New York Times, February 10 1915

In a dispatch from Petrograd, the capital of tsarist Russia, we read that “Constantinople must be taken” by the Russians. I remind the reder that Russia had declared war on the Ottoman Empire in November 1914.

The New York Times, February 10 2015

At the same time, the Austrians are attacking Turnu -Severin, a major port city on the Danube, with strategic importance for Vienna.

Two days before my grandfather got his travel document from the prefecture of Thessaloniki, on 26th April 1915 in London, Italy had signed the Treaty of London, becoming an ally of the Triple Entent and betraying the Triple Alliance where it belonged. As a result of the treaty, Italy took over control of the Dodecanese islands.

In September 1915, the Bulgarians threw in their lot with Germany and Austria-Hungary by concluding an alliance. On October 6, the great Austro-German offensive began against Serbia and Bulgaria declared war on Belgrade eight days later. Bulgarian troops spilled over Serbia’s eastern border, and an Anglo-French landing at Salonika in Greece failed to blunt the Bulgarian advance. By December 1915, the Serbian Army had collapsed and was in full flight. The Bulgarians established a defensive line to contain the Allied forces in northern Greece.

Sunday Times, Perth, Australia, Sunday 24 October 1915

In October 1915 Romania decided to join the side of England, France and Russia, on condition that the Allies send 400,000 troops to the Balkans.

My grandfather’s trip appears ot have taken place between May and July 2015. He narrowly escaped the fireworks!

The travel document was issued by the Prefect of Thessaloniki on the 28th April 1915. What you see above is the front side of the document.

The afficionados of this sort of thing will note the civil duty stamp of 5 drachmas on the top left of the document.

Its back is full of stamps and approvals, and also has the photo of the traveller.

The Trip

I will try to use the document to reconstruct part of the trip.

Approval by the Romanian Colsulate in Thessaloniki

The document by itself as issued by the Prefect of Thessaloniki was not enough. There had to be approvals by the other countries. As you see above, the Conculate of the Kingdom of Romania approved the trip on the 29th April 1915. It says also that a tax of five Lei has been applied and paid.

Approval of the trip by the Serbian Consulate in Thessaloniki

Likewise, there had to be an approval by the Serbian Consulate in Thessaloniki.

The trip begins on the 30th April 1915, as is shown on the stamp dated accordingly, by the “Passport Office of Railroad…”

The port of Prahovo, photo by Matt Lutton

From a stamp on the back side, I gather that he made his way through Serbia by railroad to the Danube port town of Prahovo. Today Prahovo is a small town of 1600 people.

The stamp on the document has a date of July 1915, apparently on the traveller’s way back to Greece.

Did the traveller follow the same route on his way to Russia, and then back? We will never know.

Drobeta Turnu-Severin in Romania

From there, 31 kilometers to the North is the town of (Drobeta) Turnu Severin, where he entered Romanian territory. There is a stamp from the police of the port in “T-Severin” to prove it.

Entry stamp in Romania - 12 May 1915

Most likely he took a river boat to get there, although there is no way of knowing.

Turnu-Severin in 1910

Turnu-Severin is a city built by the river Danube and at the beginning of the twentieth century was a significant transport hub, for moving goods to and from Central Europe to the East and the South.

“As a major port on the Danube, the freedom of trade facilitated the entry of goods by boat from Vienna and the exchange of material necessary for economic development. Severin experienced a steady economic, urban and social growth until 1972, when it received the name of Drobeta-Turnu Severin.” (Source: Wikipedia)

Old warehouses (1890s - 1900s) that once stored goods from the Danube river trade, Drobeta Turnu Severin, south western Romania.

The photo above, which I found in Valentin Mandache’s informative and specialized blog “Historic Houses of Romania“, provides testimony to the wealth an the might of the town back then.

Given its importance as a commerical traffic port, Turnu – Severin may not have been only a stop over. It is likely that my grandfather was using it as a port for shipping goods to Vienna, where he was also doing business.

From Turnu-Severin, the travelled went to Bucharest, where he got an approval to stay in Romania as the stamp dated 15 June shows.

Stamp of the bureau for the control of foreigners in Bucharest

I cannot deduce how long he stayed in Romania and when and how he travelled on to Russia and back.

Permit to enter Serbia

A little more than a month after he got the stamp from the Greek Consulate in Bucharest, he appears in the Serbian Consulate in Bucharest and receives a stamp so that he can enter Serbia. The date of the stamp is 19 July 1915.

Permit to return to Greece

The next day, 20 July 1915 my grandfather receives a stamp from the Greek Consulte in Bucharest, allowing him to travel to Greece.

Exit stamp, Turnu - Severin

Two days later, on the 22 July 1915, he exits Romania at the port of Turnu-Severin.

He arrived in Prahovo on the same day, 22 July 1915.

Four days later, and almost three months after he left Thessaloniki, on 26 July 1915, he exits Serbia, entering Greece.

There is no information regarding the date of his arrival in Thessaloniki.

As I cannot read Cyrillic, I cannot deduce anything about the traveller’s Russian itinerary and the relevant stamps.

Hellas, my Motherland – Μανα μου Ελλας

My motherland, Hellas (Greece), is on the edge of the cliff.

Even if Hellas does not fall the big fall today, she will remain dangerously close to the edge of the abyss for a long and unknown period of time.

The political and financial analysts and commentators have covered the crisis over and over again.

Today I remembered a song written by Stavros Xarchakos, in lyrics of Nikos Gatsos: “Hellas my motherland”.

It is part of the soundtrack of the Kostas Ferris movie “Rembetiko” (1983).

The lyrics are important, as in my view they contain the key that will unlock the gates of Hell or Paradise for Hellas.

(the lyrics and a video clip of the song can be found at the end of this article).

The lyrics of Gatsos take us from the start to the Minor Asia disaster of 1922, the uprooting of Hellenism from the western shores of Minor Asia (and more).

A few words later, we hear the painful direct truth: “the big words of lies”.

The lies, the fake dreams I could add, the tip of the ideological and psychological iceberg that leads to disaster.

Today we are in the midst of another disaster, that I would call “the disaster of the bliss bubble”.

In 1922 we saw the downfall of the “Great Idea” (Megali Idea).

Today we experience the downfall of the “Bliss Bubble” that dominated Greece since the early 1990’s.

In both downfalls, we, the Greek People, bear the major responsibility.

The so called “Great Powers” of course participated in the unfolding of the events, and played a role, but theirs was not the majr one.

We are the ones who committed suicide in both cases.

George Veltsos wrote in the newspaper “TO VIMA” on the 1st February 2012:

“When you have a knife on the table and instead of slicing your steak you stick it into your guts like Mishima did, you get a sense of belonging to the “beyond”, verging on megalomania”.

In addition to megalomania that provides the common psychological foundation to both disasters, I must add the political dimension of the “Bliss Bubble” model.

The political dimension of the “Bliss Bubble” is the “buyout”. Let me explain here the meaning of the word. It means a lot more than a mere transaction. It means that in addition to the transaction, you surrender unconditional control to the other party. The votes of the public, the behaviours, the consumer patterns, have all been built on the dominant phenomenon of the “buyout”. As an example, the voter is bought out by the candidate member of parliament: the “bought” vote becomes the voter son’s or daughter’s entry ticket to the safe heaven of the public sector.

This phenomenon could not have been dominant in Greece without political support and full endorsement. It is therefore a political phenomenon with economic aspects

This phenomenon that moulded the dominant social political and economic behaviour in modern Greece is at the root of the full scale social and political degeneration that we experience today.

Μπορουμε λοιπον να κανουμε μια νεα αρχη; Μπορουμε να ξεφυγουμε απο την περιδινηση των επαλληλων καταστροφων και να χαραξουμε μια νεα πορεια;

Can we make a new start? Can we escape from the downward spiral of the two consecutive disasters and chart a new course?

The answer is not in the hands of the already outdated politicians of all parties. The answer is in our hands.

Ας αναφερω ενα απλο παραδειγμα: Το μεγεθος της αγορας κρεατων στην Ελλαδα ειναι περιπου 1,4 δις ΕΥΡΩ. Απο αυτα, 836 εκατομυρια ΕΥΡΩ εισαγονται. Η αυταρκεια της χωρας σε χοιρινο κρεας ειναι περιπου 30%, σε βοειο δε μολις 14%. Τα συμπερασματα βγαινουν απο μονα τους. Αλλα οι πραξεις δεν μπορει να γινουν μονες τους. Δεν υπαρχει το αεναον παρα μονον στην ποιηση και την τεχνη. Θα πανε τα νεα παιδια, οι νεοι Ελληνες και Ελληνιδες να γινουν κτηνοτροφοι; Θα δεχθουν να δουλεψουν σκληρα και να εχουν ενα καλο βιοτικο επιπεδο χωρις χωρις να να γινουν πλουσιοι;

Let me offer a simple example. The meat consumption in Greece has a value of 1,4 billion Euros. Out of this, 836 millions are imported. The self sufficiency of the country in pork meat is only at 30%, while in beef it drops to 14%. You can draw your on conclusions. But actions cannot happen by themselves. Are the young Greeks going to raise cattle? Are they going to work hard and make a good living without becoming “rich”? That is abandoning the “Bliss Bubble” dream?

Δεν εχει νοημα να συνεχισω να αναφερω παραδειγματα. Ο νεος και η νεα θα πρεπει να παρει πρωτοβουλιες, να προσπαθησει, να απαιτησει, να επιχειρησει, και να πορευθει στον δρομο που δεν εχει σιγουρα αποτελεσματα. Προσανατολιζουμε τους νεους μας προς κατι τετοιο;

There is no point in bringing forward more examples. The young – in spirit – must take initiatives, make efforts in the direction of developing the economy, demand from the state and EU authorities real and not token support, and march on the road that offers rewards and risks at the same time. Are we going to encourage our youth to take this road?

It is clear that we cannot all succeed in everything. But we must try, putting insecurities on the side, albeit acknowledging them. The megalomania that I have mentioned in a previous section is linked to the immense insecurity that engulfs Greek society. It is time to get rid of it, like we, the very same people, do when we are abroad, in foreign lands, across five continents. Where we take risks, we work hard, and we make it to the top of whatwever we do.

This is the key that will open the Gates of Heaven. We need to take the road to an existence based on self knowledge and self determination, throwing away insecurity and fear.

This is the end of lies. We have to admit it to ourselves first, face reality and start living a real life, not an artificial one, no matter how painful this might be. This will decide the future of our country. This will also rebuild our deconstructed society.

Only through the experience of Delos did the journey to Greece became a sojourn, cleared dwelling by that which Αληθεια is.

Delos itself is that field of unconcealed hiddenness that accords sojourn: first to φυσις, to the pure and self-sheltered rise of mountains and islands, sky and sea, plants and animals, the rise where each thing appears in its strict type but also in its gently suspended form.

In the sojourn granted by αλήθεια the έργον appears as well: everything that is made and built by human work.

In this granted sojourn, the mortals themselves appear and precisely as those who respond to the unconcealed, for they bring to their proper appearance that which becomes present in this or that matter.

This is a tribute to the great Greek Writer and Painter, Niko Gabriel Pentzikis. He was born and lived almost all his life in the city of Thessaloniki in the north of Greece.

Most critics classify him as a member of the “30’s Generation” group of Greek Writers and Artists, who developed the concept of “being Greek” in a modern 20th century context. In my view, Pentzikis stands somewhere by himself, pure and authentic, a visionary and a mystic at the same time,  a lover and believer in the internal dialogue.

His paintings are equally important with his writings. Many times he comes to my mind as the “Paul Klee of the European East”.

“My Saviour, I see your House in all of its glory, but I have no proper clothes in order to enter it. You, the Bearer of Light, enlighten the armoury of my Soul, and Save me! ”

Life for Pentzikis is a study of death with Platonic touches. The humanistic ego follows and coincides with a global cosmos. The deeper meaning of existence inhabits the root of love.

(Source: Article of Athina Schina in Eleftherotypia.)

Η ζωή για τον Ν.Γ.

«O Πεθαμένος και η Aνάσταση»

Loaf with cod, armira, and seskoula – Θαλασσινο Ρολο με Μπακαλιαρο, Αρμυρα και Σεσκουλα

Stuffed Peppers with Rice – Γεμιστες Πιπεριες με ρυζι

Today I wanted to cook something light but tasty, to escape the taste of the lamb and the other Easter delicacies. This dish is easy and as a starter goes well with everything. Today it was the main dish and it behaved quite well.

I found in my neighbourhood market nice peppers from Drama (Northern Greece) in three colors: red, orange and yellow, and without any hesitation I proceeded to prepare the stuffing.

The base of the stuffing is onions and pine kernels that are brown and caramelized. After this is done, I add black raisins (small), fresh oregano leaves, salt, pepper and rice. Once the mix is homogeneous, I take the pan off the heat and add chopped cilantro and mint.

Κρεμμυδι με ψυχα κουκουναριου - Onions and pine kernels
Κρεμμυδι με ψυχα κουκουναριου – Onions and pine kernels

The rest is really easy. Open each pepper, get rid of the seeds, fill to the middle of the rim with the stuffing, add a bit of warm water or stock and cover.

Ετοιμες για το φουρνο - Ready to bake
Ετοιμες για το φουρνο – Ready to bake

I add potatoes and canned whole tomatoes (when it is not the season for them) because I need the acidity.

Bake for 45 minutes in 200 Centigrade and let it rest for 30 minutes before serving.

Ετοιμο για σερβιρισμα - Ready to serve
Ετοιμο για σερβιρισμα – Ready to serve

The peppers may burn a little, but this is part of the story!

The highlight of the taste is the interplay between cilantro, mint, raisins, pine kernels and the sweet moist flesh of the peppers in the environment created by the caramelized onions.

When I was ready to serve, my good friend L came and prepared a cheese pie (hajapuri) from Georgia (not the US state), using feta cheese and the Greek equivalent of gruyere. The pie is very thin, and the crust is made by hand minutes before using it in the pie.

“Niko’s Tavern in New Epidavros – Η Ταβερνα του Νικου στην Νεα Επιδαυρο

In the small community of Nea Epidavros, where the road ends and you arrive at the small fishing port, you can find the tavern of Nikos. Its official name is “To Kima”, bit everyone knows it by the name of its proprietor, Nikos. The tavvern goes three generations back, to the grandfather of Nikos, who started it when there was practically no one in the area, but oranges and lemons.

The area is very quite, even during the summer, let alone today, the 25th March. You sit down, 5 meters from the sea, and you listen to the concert of the birds and the sounds of the sea.

With such an advantage, Nikos could sell only “location”. However, this is not the case. Here is the proof.

It was a long time ago when I last tasted the greens called “vrouves” in Greek. They are bitter and silky soft, when cooked properly, and go very well with lemon and olive oil. There is no better way to start a meal. They were divine!

Χταποδι ξυδατο - Octopus with vinegar
Χταποδι ξυδατο - Octopus with vinegar

The octopus that followed was cooked in its own juice with a touch of salt and vinegar. Exquisite taste and texture, this dish alone deserves the visit!

Safridi is a surface fish that is considered to be second rate. It arrived grilled to perfection, and it was fresh as the daisies in the nearby field.

We concluded the lunch with grilled barbounia  (red mullets). they were perfectly grilled and full of taste. The flesh was firm and jiucy.

In the context of a visit to the ancient theater of Epidavros, providing you can do a retour, come to Nikos for lunch. You will not regret it.
